Matthew 28: 16 – 20

Imagine this…you go into a bank, grab a withdrawal slip and minutes after you hand the slip to the teller, you’re arrested by police. That happened to Ron Schatz when he went to the bank one day…and it took a while for things to get straightened out for him. See, when the teller saw the slip, she’d pressed the silent alarm button because on the back of it was written, “This is a stick up.”

When they were investigating, the police found out that someone had written “This is a stick up” on the back of every withdrawal slip on the counter, apparently as a joke. But those few words, written on a piece of paper, caused a chain reaction which changed Ron Schatz’s world at least for the time being.

Today we’re going to look at some other words…not originally written on paper…but shared with a group of friends on a mountain. These words have been repeated throughout the centuries and they ultimately changed the world and all who’ve lived in it.

After his resurrection and before he ascended back to heaven, Jesus asked his disciples to meet him on a mountain top. And what do we know about mountain tops? They’re places where some pretty amazing things happen…miracles are experienced, folks have encounters with God or other figures of faith, and always important words are spoken and heard.

But before we get to that, let’s look at what’s going on as today’s scripture unfolds. As the 28th chapter of Matthew begins, it’s Easter morning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary are on their way to the tomb to anoint Jesus’ body for burial. As they make their way to the tomb, there’s an earthquake. An angel comes down from heaven and rolls away the stone from the tomb. His appearance scares the guards so much that they become like dead men but the angel tells the women not to be afraid. He continues that Jesus has risen from the dead as he’d said he would. And then the angel gives the Marys a mission – go and tell the disciples what he’s just told them and that Jesus is going ahead of them to Galilee and he’ll meet them there.

So the women go to tell the disciples…and on their way, Jesus appears to them and after they worshipped him, he, too, tells them not to be afraid and to go tell the disciples that he would see him in Galilee.

As today’s scripture begins, Matthew writes that after the Marys tell the disciples Jesus is alive and wants to meet them on the mountain, the 11 go to Galilee just as Jesus asked. And when they see him, Matthew tells us that they worship him, but some doubt. That’s not surprising is it? I imagine that seeing the risen Christ was surprising, shocking maybe even confusing…we remember that Thomas had trouble believing…in a similar way, they were probably wondering what was going on. But they worshipped him even though they didn’t really understand what was happening.

And Jesus says to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always to the end of the age.”

So, let’s look at this a little closer. Jesus is telling them that he has the authority to give them a new mission. It’s their turn…it’s the disciple’s turn to go and do ministry. Jesus has given them the knowledge…he’d given them the skill…and soon, they’d receive the gift from on high and the Spirit would empower them to go and share the Good News of Jesus Christ with everyone they met. Jesus tells them to make disciples of all nations meaning the Good News wasn’t just for the Jewish people…it wasn’t just for those who lived in and around Jerusalem and Galilee. It was for everyone everywhere…he essentially said go into the world and make disciples.

And Jesus instructs them not just to take the authority he’s given them, but to teach others how to obey everything he’d commanded them. This instruction, too, needs to be unpacked.

So, what were the things that Jesus had commanded his disciples to do? What are his instructions to those of us who follow him today? Jesus told the disciples then and the lesson is for us today that all of the commandments can be reduced down to two...we are to love God and love neighbor. He said we are to love God with our heart, all our mind and all our soul...but he didn’t just leave it there…he continued that we are to love our neighbors as ourselves. If we love God and love others, every other commandment is met…if we love God we’ll center our lives on him…if we love God, then we’ll take time (the Sabbath) to spend with him…if we love others, we won’t hurt them, we won’t be jealous of what they have, we won’t tell untrue things about them…

To further illustrate his point, Jesus tells of a highly unusual hero in the story of the Good Samaritan helping and ultimately saving the life of the unfortunate man who fell victim to thieves who not only robbed him but left him for dead. This unexpected man…hated by many because he was a Samaritan, did the right thing while the religious did nothing but pass on by.

The rich young ruler asked Jesus what he needed to do to gain eternal life. First Jesus talked about keeping the commandments which the young man said he’d done. Then Jesus instructed him to go and sell everything he had, give the money to the poor then to follow him. When we follow Jesus Christ, we are to offer what we have…we’re to share the gifts that God has given so that everyone might have enough. That’s what the early church did…shared what they had so that everyone could have enough and that’s what we’re called to do too.

But following Jesus involves more than just sharing our gifts…we are called to also share our witness with others. We’re to talk about how God has reached into our lives and changed our hearts. We’re to share the stories of the good and bad times we’ve had and how our faith and trust in God has helped us through. We’re to study scriptures with others using the examples of the mothers and fathers in faith to buoy us up. We’re to pray for one another and ask God to guide and direct us as we seek to do his work.

We’re to reach out and share Christ’s love with others and if there was ever a time when the world needed love…it’s now. This year has been stressful for us all…our way of life has been interrupted, we can’t see many of those we love, the normal places we go have been closed and may still be closed, we may have friends and family who’ve gotten ill. So many things have happened and continue to happen that stretch our patience and wear our nerves thin. And in the midst of the stress, the exhaustion and the uncertainty tempers flare and many forget to do the right thing. But as followers of Christ we’re called to live differently. We’re called to be a force of change in the midst of chaos…we’re called to reach out to others in grace, love and peace. And we’re called to invite folks to a place where they can meet the risen Christ face to face.

As a very wise 4 – year old Sophia says, “You have to be nice to everybody. You have to be so nice to everyone in our whole world. I always have to be kind and nice and so do you.” That’s what Jesus is asking us to do…to love others and teach those around us to do the same.

But if we’re going to do this, we have to say yes to the call that Jesus places on each of us. Think about it...what if the Marys wouldn’t have gone to tell the disciples that Jesus wanted to see them on the mountain that day? What if the disciples hadn’t gone to the mountain and stayed instead in Jerusalem? What if the disciples hadn’t stayed in Jerusalem and never received the Holy Spirit? We wouldn’t know about Jesus and all he’s done for us.

So one of the questions…I’d say the main question for us to consider today is this – Will you say yes to the call that God has placed upon your life? Will you join in the Great Commission to share the Good News of Jesus Christ throughout the world? Will you help to teach others about loving God and loving neighbor by living a life of love and grace?

In order to teach and share these lessons, we have to go - this little word packs a pretty powerful punch. But it’s what we’re called to do each and every day. Whether we leave our homes or are still quarantined, we are to go into the world and share the light, love and message of Jesus Christ. We can do that through a phone call, through a text, or sending a card to someone who needs encouragement. We can do that by telling someone about our walk of faith or we can do that by living out the Christian walk.

So as we begin this new week, may we go to share the love, the presence, the grace and the message of Jesus Christ. May the love of God be seen through our actions and our words. May we be kind to one another. And may we share about our faith about this man named Jesus Christ so others might learn about the life that he offers.

And know that as we go…remember, the promise that Jesus gave to his disciples then is true for those of us who follow him today… he is with us always till the end of the age. Amen.
