Wait and Witness (Last Week's Sermon)

Luke 24: 44 – 53 (Bible Reading)

Three people arrived at the pearly gates at the same time. St. Peter came to the gate, but said he had some pressing business to do before he let them in and asked if they’d mind to wait. He was gone quite a while, but finally he came back and called one of the new folks in and asked if she’d minded waiting.

No,” she said, “I’ve looked forward to this for so long. I love God and I can’t wait to meet Jesus. I don’t mind at all.”

St. Peter then said, “Well, I have one more question, how do you spell God?”

She said, “Capital – G- o- d.”

St. Peter said, “Go right on in.”

He then went out and met another one of the new arrivals, told him to come on inside, and asked him, “Did you mind waiting?”

The man said, “Oh no. I have been a Christian for fifty years, and I’ll spend eternity here. I didn’t mind at all.”

So, St. Peter said, “Just one more thing. How do you spell ‘God’?”

He said, “G-o-d. No, I mean capital-G.”

St. Peter said that was good and sent him into heaven.

St. Peter went back out and invited the third person in and asked her if she had mind waiting.

As a matter of fact, I did,” she replied, “I’ve had to stand in line all my life – at the supermarket, when I went to school, when I registered my children for school, when I went to the movies – everywhere – and I resent that I had to wait in line for heaven too!”

St. Peter said, “Well that’s all right for you to feel that way. It won’t be held against you, but there is just one more question. How do you spell ‘Czechoslovakia’?”

Waiting…it’s something that, in our have to have it now society, we don’t want to do. But it’s what we’ve been forced to do for most of this year, isn’t it? Have we enjoyed it? Maybe, at times, but I think most of us are kinda over it by now. It’s hard to wait. We know that pretty well and it’s probably more evident now than ever before. But there are times when waiting is good … sometimes it helps us to prepare for something … other times it allows God’s presence and power to come to fruition … and then there are the times that waiting offers us a chance to build up our anticipation and share the joy of God’s presence even in the midst of the wait.

The disciples, especially after the crucifixion, experienced these types of waiting. They waited in fear because they were concerned about their safety. But this time of uncertainty was also beneficial for the disciples because it prepared them for what they were going to experience when they found out that Jesus had been raised from the dead.

But their waiting wasn’t over with the resurrection. In today’s scripture from the Gospel according to Luke, Jesus is talking to the disciples and he says, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you – everything in the scriptures must be fulfilled.” And Luke continues that their minds were opened to understand the scriptures … and they’re reminded of what the Messiah was destined to do.

Jesus then tells them that they’re to go out and witness to the things that God has done through him. And he talks about how there was something that God was sending to them but they need to stay in Jerusalem in order to receive this gift.

I imagine the disciples, at this point, were excited to share some of what they’d learned about Jesus. For three years, they walked beside him and had witnessed so many awesome things. They’d experienced the joy of seeing the risen Christ and they were continuing to learn from him about who he was and why God had sent him. With all that had happened, they probably wanted to run out and let everyone know what they’ve seen, heard and experienced. And they’d want to do that right then. I mean, can’t you almost picture Peter saying something like, “OK … you’ve given us this information…we better understand who you are and what you’ve done … we get it … let’s get going! Let’s share the Good News of who you are with the world. Come on, guys, we can do this, let’s go!”

But Jesus bursts their bubbles saying, “You can’t go just yet. You have to wait. You have to first receive the power of God. Hang out here in Jerusalem until you receive power from on high.” I’d bet that waiting had to be difficult for the disciples … they’d been through so much and were probably so excited to be able to share some of what they’d experienced over the past several days.

But even though they were anxious and excited to share what they’d learned, they had to wait. The disciples went with Jesus out to Bethany and there they received his blessing … how cool would that be to receive a blessing from Jesus himself. And Luke writes that as he was blessing them, Jesus withdrew from them and was carried to heaven.

Having one of their best friends and their savior leave them might’ve made some folks sad. But Luke writes that instead the disciples were filled with great joy and returned to Jerusalem. And in the midst of their waiting they were continually in the temple blessing God. And little did they know what was yet to come.

Because of their faithfulness and because of their obedience, the disciples received one of the greatest gifts ever. And at the right time … in the right place … the gift of the Spirit came to the disciples and empowered them to witness to the presence, power and love of Christ. And, this gift allowed them to share the Good News with everyone no matter what language they spoke … and for the first time, people could hear and begin to understand that the grace God offers to each and every one of us is out of his great love for us.

Our Methodist Father in faith, John Wesley, longed, worked and waited to find a way to gain salvation. At first, he believed that he needed to do something in order to gain God’s favor. But then, on this day, 282 years ago, John was at a worship service where the Holy Spirit revealed to him, through the words of Paul to the church at Rome, that grace was offered by God freely and that there was nothing he could do earn God’s favor. He later wrote about this experience saying, “That night my heart was strangely warmed …” John’s time of waiting was over…and through him, the Methodist denomination was born.

The Holy Spirit, which was given to the waiting disciples that first Pentecost in Jerusalem, began a revolution that continues still today. And the disciples received the gift of the Spirit because they obeyed and they waited on this great gift from God.

At different times in our lives, we too will be called to wait. And while we know that waiting can be difficult … it can be stressful … it can seem like it takes forever, we also know that often, when the waiting is over and we’re given the chance to look back, we can see that it has been a time of blessings.

Today’s scripture gives us a little guidance on what we can do during times of waiting. The disciples teach us that during difficult times, we can praise God. Sometimes the thought of praising God seems one of the last things we wanna do. Praising God in the midst of the unknown? How do we do that? But if we look for God’s presence throughout the waiting, we are reminded that we’re not waiting alone and that can bring us joy. Luke writes that he disciples, as they waited for the Holy Spirit, were in the temple continually blessing God.

And we are called to do the same. During times of waiting, we can spend time steeping ourselves in God’s presence through prayer and meditation. As we do this, we not only learn more about God, his love and his presence, but we deepen our relationship with God as well. If we read and study the scriptures, God’s word reminds us that God is faithful to his promises.

When we calmly, thoughtfully and prayerfully wait, mission and ministry will begin in and through us. And as we wait, our strength in God will continue to grow and we’ll be clothed in and empowered by the Holy Spirit.

As we continue our time of waiting, know that as we do … we are not alone. God is with us … he’s offering us his love and strength throughout this time. Over the last few weeks, we’ve opened our eyes to see God in our midst … I encourage you to continue to look for God … for when you look for him, you will find him.

We are called to continue the work of sharing the love, presence and grace of God with everyone we meet ... especially in the times we live in now. So, look for God around you … rejoice in the time that we have to wait … rejoice in the presence, power and love of God. And know that God’s presence goes with us each step of the way.
